Born and raised in East London, but originally from Ghana, Mellissa was always intrigued by different cultures and the communities in which they function. After having received her BA in English Literature and American Studies with Creative Writing at Kent University, UK, she went on to teach English and P.E (yes, odd combination) for two years before deciding she had had enough exposure to people. In that time, her love of writing increased, as well as her need to travel and experience new cultures again. Since her BA gave her a healthy appreciation and respect of American literature and writers, she decided to apply for her Master's in America. She gained a master's in DePaul University's Writing and Publishing Programme in Spring 2013.
Passionate around issues involving Identity, culture and social justice, Mel is now pursuing a PhD in Literacy Language and Culture at UIC.

We have worked hard to put together an incredible day for the women of Chicago, while carefully stewarding our resources in a way that honors God. We believe this day will be a blessing to you and that cost of your ticket is an investment not only in your own spiritual growth, but in the lives of the teachers, artists, local organizations, and laborers who come together to make Rooted happen.
If you are not able to afford the full admission price, our partners at Re:Source Global are generously offering a limited amount of scholarships to women at 50% of the cost.
We believe in the value of this day, we also want it to be accessible. We believe that every woman, regardless of her financial circumstances, deserves a seat at this table.
So, if the cost is prohibitive and you would like to submit a request for a scholarship, please send an email to rootedchicago@gmail.com that simply says "Scholarship Request" and we will provide you an individual code that is good for one discounted ticket.
You. Her. Anyone.

Making a weekend out of it? Awesome!
Here's a list of nearby hotels and some of our favorites places to eat.
We're all wired different and are standing in different seasons. The afternoon sessions will be a time to focus on some areas we are either passionate for or want to learn more about.
The purpose of these sessions is to take the inspiration and turn it into action. To make some plans. Each session will include lunch, a speaker, and time for connection with like-minded women. We plan to provide tangibile ways to make a greater impact in these areas.
We worship one God, the creator of ALL people. Why are conversations and action steps to pursue diversity important? How do we listen and learn from we learn from the experiences of others? What is the value of creating a community and relationships and "doing life" with people who have different experiences, stories, and lives than we do? What does God say about this and how does a diverse community enable us to grow deeper roots and live a more grounded life?
